Our story began as high school sweethearts, growing up in sunny, Tampa, Florida. From awkward first kisses to raising a family of three boys, we’ve spent nearly three decades learning, growing, and building a life side by side. Over the years, our marriage has carried us through seasons of joy, ministry, and purpose, but also through valleys of loss, broken communication, and deep personal struggle.

Denette’s faith journey began early, when she gave her heart to Christ at just five years old and began living out her faith with authenticity and courage. For Kurt, surrender came later—eight years into our marriage, after walking through numbness, infidelity, and the kind of brokenness that leaves you wondering if restoration is even possible.

But that moment of surrender was also the beginning of a new story. Redemption. Healing. Hope.

For decades, we poured our lives into serving the local church and the Tampa Bay community—roles that stretched from senior associate pastor and director of ministry development to youth pastor, mentor, and coach. We’ve prayed with couples, cast vision for families, and walked alongside people through every season of life. What we’ve built isn’t theoretical; it has been tested, refined, and proven in the fire.

On May 5, 2022, after years in church leadership, we stepped out in faith to fully embrace a new calling: equipping couples to build authentic marriages and strengthen families for everyday life. Out of that step, Broken for Better was born.

Just three short weeks later, our lives were shaken to the core. On May 30, 2022, we faced unimaginable tragedy when our youngest son, Logan, and his girlfriend were killed in a tragic accident. Walking through such immense grief shook us to our core, but it did not break us. Instead, it gave deeper meaning to the heart behind Broken for Better. What might have been meant to destroy us instead set our mission ablaze: to live with intentionality and to show that even in the hardest storms, God’s purposes for marriage such as redemption, refuge, and radical hope can still thrive.
